Letter to the Archbishop of Myra on a society for the defense of the Catholic religion
to be defended the Catholic religion.
To the Venerable Brother Dominic, Archbishop of Myra
Pius PP. VII.
Venerable brother, greetings and apostolic blessing.
1 § 1. It has been reported to Us that certain men distinguished by talent and learning, inflamed with zeal for defending and protecting the Catholic religion, have not long since established a society to meet together on fixed days, and to hold great disputations and dialogues on so grave, so abundant, and so illustrious a subject, with a large gathering; and that they have moreover admitted into their society many young men endowed with excellent abilities and promise, whom they exercise as recruits, so that, instructed and prepared, they may go forth when circumstances and times call them into the field and into battle. We could not but be greatly delighted by such zeal kindled in this city, in which the very seat and stronghold of the Catholic religion has been divinely placed; and We have deemed it fitting to signify this to you, venerable brother, by these letters and to make it known, and We have also been much pleased that you are placed in charge of this important matter. Therefore We hope that, with God approving and assisting your counsels and undertakings, no small benefit will proceed therefrom for the common Christian good, and no small praise and glory will be gained for you and for this city. We for Our part and this holy apostolic See will at all times truly and earnestly favor you as you act faithfully and strenuously. Given at Rome at St. Mary Major under the Fisherman's Ring on the twenty-seventh day of January in the year one thousand eight hundred and one, in the first year of Our pontificate.

tuenda catholica religione.
Al venerabile fratello Domenico arcivescovo di Mirene
Pio PP. VII.
Venerabile fratello, salute e benedizione apostolica.
