Letter on the institution of the Holy Childhood Day
TO BE PROMOTED BY PRAYERS FROM HOLY CHILDHOOD AND BY COLLECTED ALMS. PIUS PP. XII
1 Beloved Son, greetings and Apostolic Blessing. — The President of the Pontifical Work entrusted to Holy Childhood, having recently sent Us official letters, humbly and earnestly besought Us that, just as a day is assigned each year for the advancement of sacred Missions, so likewise a day should be set apart each year for the same Pontifical Work, which he worthily presides over, to be promoted by prayers directed to God and by collected alms. This proposal pleased Us greatly; and We judge it most opportune to comply with these wishes and to grant this petition most benignly. For We are confident that, when this matter is put into practice everywhere according to ability, the Pontifical Work of Holy Childhood will become more widely known day by day and held in proper esteem, and will receive no small increase from publicly proclaimed supplications and gathered contributions. This is indeed a matter very close to Our heart, since We well know that in those regions into which the heralds of the Gospel bring the Christian name and Christian worship, there is a vast multitude of infants and children, whose needs it is as necessary to meet as anything can be. To receive abandoned little ones with the greatest charity, to educate and nourish them in the manner of Catholics, to wash them with lustral water and to purify them according to rite, to instruct them in letters and in the practice of arts, to form them in evangelical virtue, and to make them citizens worthy of the Christian and civil name: all these things the Pontifical Work has undertaken to accomplish according to its ability, with praiseworthy counsel and praiseworthy effort. Wherefore, if all the Christian faithful shall aid these same things by praying and giving, they will indeed accomplish a work which We most highly commend, and which will, as We trust, bring them the most abundant heavenly rewards from God. Do thou therefore favor, Beloved Son, these wishes of Ours and Our will by communicating them to the Ordinaries of places in whatever manner thou shalt judge most fitting; so that appropriate norms may be established by which these same wishes and proposals may be happily brought to effect.
2 Meanwhile, as a pledge of heavenly graces and a token of Our benevolence, We most lovingly impart the Apostolic Blessing to thee, Beloved Son, and to those who render their diligent labor to this Pontifical Work, and to all and each who shall contribute to the advancement of this cause, especially on the day which shall be appointed.
3 Given at Rome, at St. Peter's, on the 4th day of December, in the year 1950, in the twelfth year of Our Pontificate.

CIUM A SANCTA INFANTIA PRECIBUS AC COLLATA STIPE PROMOVENDUM. PIUS PP. XII
3 Datum Romae, apud Sanctum Petrum, die iv mensis Decembris, anno MDCCCCX, Pontificatus Nostri duodecimo.

DELL'OPERA DELLA SANTA INFANZIA PROMOSSA CON PREGHIERE E OFFERTE. PIO PP. XII
1 Diletto Figlio Nostro, salute e Benedizione Apostolica.
