THE RECTOR OF PHILOSOPHICAL DISCIPLINE REJOICES THAT IT IS BEING INCREASED.

1 Beloved Son, greetings and apostolic blessing. — The things which you recently reported to Us concerning this University of studies which you govern, whether they pertain to the authority and weight of the doctors of the curia, or to the soundness of the doctrines which are taught there, or to the holiness of discipline by which all students, especially clerics, are governed, — these things indeed you already know have been most pleasing to Us. But nevertheless it seemed good to Us to send these letters to you, from which We wish it to appear how greatly We esteem both your work in directing this Institute and the foresight of the bishops in protecting it. But that is especially pleasing to Us, that they, at your urging, are thinking about increasing the professorships of philosophy according to Our wishes, namely so that this kind of more serious study, upon which, as upon a foundation, the rest depends, may be rightly and solidly established. It remains that, since the Institute abounds in a supply of excellent doctors, it should also flourish in the number of students, which indeed is too small: for thus at last will it be able to bring forth the abundant fruits which are expected for the common good. And this will be conveniently accomplished if the bishop patrons strive to send two or three students each year to that place, to be trained in philosophy and sacred disciplines; and We indeed greatly desire that they do this. But as a sign of divine gifts and as a testimony of Our singular benevolence toward you, beloved Son, and toward the venerable Brethren to whom this Athenaeum is entrusted, and toward all its teachers and students, We most lovingly impart the apostolic blessing.

1 Diletto Figlio, salute e benedizione apostolica.
