Veritas ipsa
Bull on the enslavement of the Indians
Paul III to all Christian faithful who shall inspect these present letters, greeting and apostolic blessing.
1 Truth itself, which can neither deceive nor be deceived, when it sent Preachers of the faith to the office of preaching, is known to have said: Go, teach all nations—all, He said, without any distinction, since all are capable of receiving the discipline of the faith. Seeing this, and envying it, the enemy of mankind, who always opposes good works that they may perish, has devised a hitherto unheard-of method to prevent the word of God from being preached to the nations that they might be saved; and he has stirred up certain of his satellites, who, desiring to fulfill their greed, presume to assert everywhere that the western and southern Indians and other peoples who have come to our knowledge in these times, on the pretext that they lack the Catholic faith, ought to be directed to our service like brute animals, and they reduce them to servitude, pressing them with such afflictions as scarcely brute animals serving them are pressed with. We therefore, who bear the place of the same our Lord, though unworthy, on earth, and who seek with all our effort to bring the sheep of His flock committed to us, which are outside His fold, to that same fold, considering that the Indians themselves, as true men, are not only capable of receiving the Christian faith, but, as we have learned, hasten most readily to that faith itself, and wishing to provide suitable remedies in these matters, do by these present letters decree and declare by Apostolic authority that the aforesaid Indians and all other peoples who shall come to the knowledge of Christians in the future, although they exist outside the Christian faith, are able to use and possess their liberty and the dominion of their own things freely and licitly and to enjoy them, nor ought they to be reduced to servitude; and whatever is done otherwise shall be null and void. And the same Indians and other peoples are to be invited to the aforesaid faith of Christ by the preaching of the word of God and by the example of a good life, notwithstanding the foregoing and all other things to the contrary whatsoever.
