1 Affinché a te, diletto figlio, sia più noto quanto propensa sia la Nostra volontà di accordare opportunamente favori a te e alla Società, il cui supremo governo hai recentemente assunto e lodevolmente amministri, non disdegniamo di accogliere con paterna benignità le preghiere che il diletto figlio Vespasiano Trigona, Sacerdote della medesima Società, a Noi pure sommamente raccomandato, recentemente ci ha presentato. Egli infatti umilmente ci ha esposto che nel Tempio della Casa Professa della medesima Società nella città di Palermo eretto, si trova istituita una pubblica Congregazione di ambo i sessi chiamata della Penitenza sotto l'invocazione di Santa Maria Maddalena, la quale è retta da due Sacerdoti della ricordata Società con grande frutto di anime, e nella quale ogni martedì di ciascuna settimana si compiono moltissimi uffici di pietà cristiana.

2 Questa Congregazione fu canonicamente eretta da Alessandro Papa VII, di felice memoria, Nostro predecessore, il quindici del mese di luglio dell'anno millesecentocinquantacinque, e fu confermata l'undici del mese di maggio dell'anno millesecentottantotto dal Venerabile Innocenzo XI, parimenti Nostro predecessore; tuttavia con quella condizione, come è prescritto nelle Lettere Apostoliche di ambedue i Nostri predecessori nella medesima forma di Breve, che nessun'altra Congregazione potesse da allora in poi ad essa aggregarsi; altrimenti le Indulgenze e gli altri doni celesti concessi alla medesima Congregazione della Penitenza sarebbero di nessun valore e momento. Poiché però Noi, per mezzo di altre Nostre Lettere nella pari forma di Breve e spedite sotto la Bolla d'Oro, abbiamo elargito alla Congregazione detta PRIMA-PRIMARIA e istituita negli edifici del Collegio Romano della medesima tua Società moltissimi tesori di Indulgenze e di doni divini, lo stesso Vespasiano, desiderando che, non ostante la condizione apposta nelle lodate Lettere di Alessandro e Innocenzo predecessori, e rimanendo ferme le Indulgenze da essi predecessori concesse alla predetta Congregazione della Penitenza, la medesima Congregazione della Penitenza potesse aggregarsi alla PRIMA-PRIMARIA suddetta, Noi umilmente ha supplicato affinché nei premessi opportunamente provvedessimo con benignità e autorità Apostolica. Noi pertanto, non desiderando nulla più ardentemente che tutti i fedeli di Cristo siano dolcemente e fortemente attratti a compiere gli esercizi di pietà cristiana anche per mezzo dei doni celesti, e volendo prosequire te, diletto figlio, e la tua Società con più ampi favori di grazie, a te, attuale e pro tempore esistente Preposto Generale della Società di Gesù, per mezzo del tenore delle presenti, con autorità Apostolica, concediamo e impartiamo la facoltà che non solo la più volte ricordata Congregazione della Penitenza nel Tempio della Casa Professa di Palermo, come sopra si è detto, eretta, ma tutte e singole, tanto di uomini quanto di donne ovvero di ambo i sessi, Congregazioni, Confraternite e Sodalizi, sia negli edifici sia nelle Chiese della Società di Gesù in ogni luogo, canonicamente erette ed erette ovvero da erigersi e da eriggersi, non ostanti qualsivoglia Costituzioni Apostoliche, sia per una particolare Congregazione sia generalmente edite, in contrario delle presenti facien-

3 ti, potrai e potrai valere di aggregare la predetta PRIMA-PRIMARIA ovvero di farle aggregare e permettere, e qualunque dei tuoi successori potrà e varrà.

4 Nel frattempo la benedizione Apostolica a te, diletto figlio, e ai religiosi alunni della medesima Società peramorosamente impartiamo. Vogliamo inoltre che ai transunti o copie delle presenti Lettere, anche stampate, sottoscritte di mano di alcun Notaio pubblico e munite del sigillo di persona costituita in dignità ecclesiastica, sia prestata la medesima fede che si presterebbe alle presenti stesse, se fossero esibite o mostrate. Dato a Roma, presso Santa Maria Maggiore, sotto l'anello del Pescatore, l'otto settembre dell'anno millesecentocinquantuno, del Nostro Pontificato l'anno dodicesimo.

Beloved son, greetings and Apostolic blessing.

1 That it may be more known to you, beloved son, how willingly and favorably We are disposed to grant your requests and those of the Society, whose supreme governance you have recently undertaken and are laudably conducting: We do not disdain to accede with paternal kindness to the petitions which the beloved son Vespasian Trigona, a Priest of the same Society and most highly commended to Us, recently presented. For he humbly set forth to Us that in the Temple of the Professed House of the same Society erected in the city of Palermo, there is found a public Congregation of both sexes called of Penance under the invocation of St. Mary Magdalene, which is governed by two Priests of the aforesaid Society with great fruit of souls, and in which on every Tuesday of each week very many offices of Christian piety are performed.

2 This Congregation was canonically erected by Pope Alexander VII of blessed memory, Our predecessor, on the fifteenth day of the month of July, in the year 1655, and was confirmed on the eleventh day of the month of May, in the year 1678, by the Venerable Innocent XI, likewise Our predecessor; with this condition, however, as is prescribed in the Apostolic letters of both Our predecessors in similar form of Brief, that it could not thereafter be aggregated to any other Congregation; otherwise the Indulgences and other heavenly gifts granted to the said Congregation of Penance would be of no value and moment. Since, however, We, through other Our letters in like form of Brief and expedited under the Golden Bull, have bestowed upon the Congregation called PRIMA-PRIMARIA and instituted in the buildings of the Roman College of your Society very many treasures of Indulgences and divine charisms, the same Vespasian, desiring that, notwithstanding the condition appended in the aforesaid letters of Alexander and Innocent Our predecessors, and with the Indulgences granted by the same predecessors to the aforesaid Congregation of Penance remaining firm, the same Congregation of Penance might be aggregated to the aforesaid PRIMA-PRIMARIA. He therefore humbly supplicated Us that We would deign to provide opportunely in the foregoing matters by Our kindness and Apostolic authority. We therefore, desiring nothing more earnestly than that all the faithful of Christ be sweetly and strongly drawn to the performance of exercises of Christian piety also by heavenly gifts, and pursuing you, beloved son, and your Society with more abundant favors of grace, to you, the present and for the time being existing Superior General of the Society of Jesus, by the tenor of these presents, by Apostolic authority, We grant and impart the faculty that not only the aforesaid Congregation of Penance in the Temple of the Professed House in Palermo, as is premised, erected, but all and each, both of men and of women or of both sexes, Congregations, Confraternities and Sodalities, whether in the buildings or in the Churches of the Society of Jesus everywhere, canonically erected and to be erected, notwithstanding any Apostolic Constitutions whatsoever, whether issued for a particular Congregation or generally, to the contrary of these presents notwithstanding, you may and are able to aggregate or cause to be aggregated and permit, and any of your successors may and are able to do so.

4 Meanwhile We most lovingly impart the Apostolic blessing to you, beloved son, and to the religious students of the same Society. We will, however, that to copies or exemplars of these same letters, even printed ones, subscribed by the hand of some public Notary and furnished with the seal of a person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, the same faith be given as would be given to these same presents, if they were exhibited or shown. Given at Rome, at St. Mary Major, under the Fisherman's Ring, on the eighth day of September, in the year 1751, in the twelfth year of Our Pontificate.
