Citato in 1 voce dell'Enciclopedia ↓
XXIX.

XXIX.
That women, even under the pretext of any privilege, faculty or license, cannot enter (except in cases expressly stated here) the monasteries and cloisters of any Order of regular observance.
1 Pius, Pope V, for perpetual remembrance of the matter. Desiring to provide for the peace of regular persons who, having left the world, have dedicated themselves to the service of God, and wishing to exercise the care committed to us in removing those things which can impede their religious purpose, we willingly direct our attention to ensuring that, hindered by nothing which might turn them away from divine worship, they may, according to the regular institutes of their Orders and the decree of the sacred Council of Trent, render grateful service to the Most High with tranquil minds.
2 § 1. Since therefore the peace of the Carthusian Order and of other Orders professing the regular life is accustomed to be disturbed not a little, as we have learned, because women, forgetful of matronly modesty, dare to enter their houses and monasteries, contrary to their institutes, under the pretext of confessional letters or other apostolic letters, sometimes even with the abbots, superiors, priors and other presiding officers remonstrating and resisting, not without great trouble to them, nor without serious offense and scandal to some, if they should happen to be admitted too easily.
3 § 2. Wishing to provide for this matter, by our own motion and certain knowledge and from the fullness of apostolic power, we revoke all and singular faculties and licenses for entering the monasteries and houses of the Carthusians and of any other whatsoever Orders of regular observance, even of Mendicants, granted to women of whatsoever status, rank, order, condition, and endowed with whatsoever dignity or preeminence, even countesses, marchionesses, duchesses, under whatsoever tenor and forms of words, and with whatsoever clauses, even derogatory clauses and derogations of derogations, and other stronger, more efficacious and unusual clauses, as well as irritant decrees, by the Apostolic See in whatsoever manner conceded, the tenor of which we will to be held as expressed, just as if they were inserted word for word in the present document, and by the tenor of these presents we declare them to be revoked, null, void and of no effect.
4 § 3. We strictly forbid women claiming the aforesaid faculties and licenses for entering, under penalty of excommunication incurred by the very fact of the sentence, after they shall have had knowledge of these letters, from which they cannot be absolved except by us or by the Roman Pontiff who shall be in office at the time, except in the article of death, lest they dare to enter the said houses and monasteries.
5 § 4. And to the abbots, superiors, priors and other presiding officers of the monasteries and convents themselves, by whatsoever name they are called, and to their monks, canons and brothers, whether Mendicants or non-Mendicants, under penalty of deprivation of the offices which they hold at present and of incapacity in the future for those and all other offices, and of suspension from the divine offices incurred by the very fact, without any other declaration, we forbid them to presume to introduce or admit them.
6 § 5. Notwithstanding the aforesaid apostolic constitutions, ordinances and dispositions,
7 and all things contrary whatsoever.
8 § 6. We will and command that these public letters be published in the customary manner at the doors of the basilica of St. Peter, Prince of the Apostles, and in our Chancery, and in the Campo di Fiore.
9 § 7. Since it would be difficult to carry these letters to all places, we will and declare that copies and transcripts of them, whether manuscript or printed, and subscribed by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of some prelate, shall have equal force everywhere, just as if the present letters had been exhibited or shown.
10 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, under the Fisherman's Ring, on 24 October, in the year one thousand five hundred sixty-six, in the first year of our pontificate.
11 Given 24 October 1566, pontificate year 1.
