with the sacred council approving, is confirmed and renewed. — 1. Notwithstanding anything whatsoever.
Julius, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter, with the sacred council approving.

1 If the supreme Maker of all things, sower of lands and sky, by His ineffable providence, has willed to preside over the matters to be observed.

2 pastoral care over the Christian people, so that He might govern the holy Roman universal Church with sincere heart and deed, and attend with solicitous zeal to the advancement of all the faithful; we deem it fitting and salutary that, in the election of the aforesaid Pontiff, upon whom, as upon a mirror of purity and brightness, the faithful themselves gaze, every blemish and every suspicion thereof be absent; and that such be assumed to so great a height of dignity, who, having entered rightly and properly and canonically, in manner and order befitting, may sustain the helm of Peter's ship, and such exist, constituted in so great a pinnacle of dignity, that they be a solace to the good and upright, but a terror to the wicked, and by their example other faithful may be instructed to work well, and be directed to the way of salvation; and that those things which for this reason have been established and ordained by us, on account of the magnitude and gravity of the matter, be approved and renewed by the sacred general council, and being approved and renewed be communicated, so that they may endure more firmly and be observed more tenaciously, and be defended against the manifold snares of the devil, by having been surrounded more often with the authority by which they were spoken.

3 § 1. Indeed, some time ago by us, for great and urgent causes, with great and mature discussion and deliberation with the most learned and most grave men, even the cardinals of the holy Roman Church, having preceded and been held, letters of the following tenor were issued, etc. (as in the same bull).

4 lUtICS

5 § 2. Which letters thereafter, for their own causes and firmer subsistence and notoriety, when we were at Bologna with our Curia, in the month of October, in the seventh year of our pontificate, in our secret consistory, also with our venerable brothers the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church and some of our domestic prelates, were read and published and approved, and finally described and noted in the register of the Chancery, and in the audience of contradictions and in other public places of the said city, and lastly at Rome, in designated places, were published from letters, and copies of them were transmitted to almost all Christian princes.

6 § 3. We moreover, considering how much and in what manner, to the weight of the quality of the exile of Christ's vicar an more abundant care, from the honors in times of adulterate elections of the same Pontiff, would be and how much detriment to Christian religion with the sacred council approving, could be brought, especially in these difficult and most difficult times, in which Christian religion universal is vexed in diverse ways; wishing to oppose, as much as is permitted to us, the snares and insidies of Satan, human presumption and ambition, so that the aforesaid letters may be observed all the more, the more clearly it is established that they have been approved and renewed by the mature and salutary deliberation of the said sacred council, as they were established and ordained, although for their subsistence and validity they required no other approval, but for more abundant caution and to remove every cause of deceit and malice from those thinking ill and striving to contravene so salutary a constitution, so that they may be observed all the more tenaciously and be removed with greater difficulty, by having been fortified by the approval of so great fathers, the aforesaid letters, with all and singular the statutes, ordinances, decrees, definitions, penalties, prohibitions and all other and singular clauses contained in them, this sacred Lateran council approving, with authority and fullness of power we approve and renew, and we command that they be observed inviolably and irrefragably and kept, and obtain the strength of perpetual firmness

7 and the cardinals, mediators, orators, nuncios and others contained in the said letters, to the observance of the same letters and of all and singular things expressed in them, under the censures and penalties and others contained in them, according to the tenor and form of the same letters, we decree and declare to be held and obligated.

8 § 4. Notwithstanding the constitutions Quibuscumque, notwithstanding apostolic ordinances and all those things which in the said letters we willed not to hinder, and all other things whatsoever to the contrary.

9 Let no one therefore, etc.

10 Given at Rome in the Lateran basilica, in sacred session, in the year of the Lord 1513, on the eighteenth day before the Kalends of March, in the tenth year of our pontificate.

11 Given on 16 February 1513, pontificate, year ten.

12 LEO X POPE CCXIX

13 In the year of the Lord 1513.
