ABRAMO BEN CHANANIA

Also known as: Abraham ben Hananiah

ABRAHAM BEN CHANANIA. - Converted rabbi, of the Galiki family, b. at Monselice, d. around 1625. Having become a Christian in 1605 or shortly thereafter, he took the name Camillo Jaghel, in homage to Pope Paul V.

He was a reviser of Hebrew books in the Marca d'Ancona.

Before converting, he wrote in Hebrew good ascetic works on a biblical basis: Séfer léqah jōbh (Book of good doctrine; cf. Prov. 4, 1), a Jewish catechesis between master and disciple (Venice 1595; London 1679, with a Latin translation), very widespread and often reprinted; Mōshia' ḥosim (Salvation of the faithful, Venice 1587 and 1604), in which he recommends treating the plague with the fear of God and prayer; Étet hail (The valiant woman, ibid. 1611).
