ABRAHAM OF BĒTH RABBĀN. - Syriac doctor, who lived from 449 to 569. He was director for about 60 years of the school of Nisibis, in which he succeeded (according to Mari, p. 39) the founder Narsai, of whom he was a disciple and relative and whose name he adopted (even the surname Beth Rabbān means "of the house of our master," that is, of Narsai). Under him the school had great development.
According to Barhadbābbā (end of the 6th century), in PO 4, 389 and 9, 628, his works are: commentaries on the prophets, on Eccl. Ios. and Iudc., as well as an epistle written by order of Justinian, in which he sets forth his Nestorian faith and responds to doctrinal questions put to him by his enemies. But the catalogue of Ebedesu (Assemani, Bibl. Orient., III, 71) attributes many others to him. The ms. of Diarbekir, II, attributes to him some liturgical hymns which would be his only writings that have come down to us. That ms. is now at the patriarchate of Mosul (Vosté, in Muséon, 50 [1937], p. 349).
