MOSSUL. - A city in Iraq, which falls under the following ecclesiastical jurisdictions:
1) Patriarchal diocese of the Patriarch of Babylon (v.) of the Chaldeans, re-established in the 18th century. It has 44,314 faithful, 40 priests, 24 churches, and a patriarchal seminary with 6 professors and 25 seminarians.
2) Syriac Catholic diocese since 1790, with 25,000 faithful, 12 parishes, 12 churches, 24 priests, and 10 schools.
3) Mission. Italian Dominicans worked in M. from 1750 to 1815. In 1856, the mission was resumed by French Dominicans, who continue their work there today. The principal works of this mission are: the interritual seminary of St. John, with 12 professors (8 of whom are Dominicans) and 46 students (8 of whom are in the major seminary); the secondary school called Mosul College, with 87 pupils; the orphanage, with 30 children; in addition to spiritual assistance to Catholics employed by the Kirkuk branch of the Iraq Petroleum Company. The mission staff includes 10 Dominican priests, 5 secular priests, 7 Dominican tertiary sisters of St. Catherine, and 20 lay people.
