MASSIMO III MAZLOM. — Catholic Melkite Patriarch of Antioch from 1833 to 1855. B. in Aleppo in Nov. 1779, d. in Alexandria on 11 July 1866. Ordained a priest in 1806 and consecrated bishop in 1810, he was subsequently elected Patriarch of Antioch and confirmed by Rome in 1836.
Highly favorable to Gallican ideas, yet nevertheless sincerely attached to the Catholic Church, he was very intelligent and energetic. He obtained from Pope Gregory XVI the personal privilege of bearing the title of Patriarch of Antioch, Alexandria, and Jerusalem. M. organized the Melkite community in Egypt. Under his direction, the Melkite Church experienced considerable growth.
