ABŪ HENNIS (better Deyr Abū Hennis). - A Coptic village located southwest of Sheikh 'Ibada (Antinoupolis), which preserves the remains of an important 5th-century basilica, transformed (perhaps in the 13th-14th century) into a church with domes. It was probably the main church of that Christian city whose ruins, situated in the vicinity, today bear the name al-Madīna (cf. Somers Clarke, Christian Antiquities in the Nile Valley, Oxford 1902, pp. 181-87). In a valley near the village there are some ancient stone quarries that were adapted into Christian chapels from the earliest times. The walls are decorated with paintings of the 5th-6th century, relatively well preserved, with figurations of Gospel episodes arranged according to the chronological order of events and in continuous narrative. They are edited by J. Clédat, Notes archéologiques et philologiques, in Bulletin de l'Institut Français d'archéologie orientale, 2 (Cairo 1902).
