ADINOLFI, PASQUALE. - Priest and writer, b. in Rome on 5 Nov. 1816, d. on 20 Jan. 1882. Ordained in 1839, he devoted himself, exploring archives and studying documents, to original research in medieval Roman topography, of which he gave a first essay with Laterano e via Maggiore (Rome 1857). Four other essays are fragments of his principal work Roma nell'età di mezzo (Rome 1881-82), conceived in eight volumes but left in manuscript, owing to the author's death, after the second. Despite his artificial manner of expression and his lack of criticism, since he chose to ignore the most recent studies on the subject, this is the first great work on the topography of Rome in the 14th and 15th centuries, still held in esteem by scholars for the wealth of its information.
