ADINOLFI, PASQUALE

PASQUALE ADINOLFI. — Priest and writer, born in Rome on 5 Nov. 1816, died on 20 Jan. 1882. Ordained in 1839, he devoted himself to original research on medieval Roman topography by exploring archives and studying documents, publishing a first essay with *Laterano e via Maggiore* (Rome 1857). Four other essays are fragments of his major work *Roma nell’età di mezzo* (Rome 1881–82), conceived in eight volumes but left in manuscript after the author’s death, following the completion of the second volume. Despite his artificial style and lack of critical method—owing to his ignoring the most recent studies on the subject—this remains the first major work on the topography of Rome in the 14th and 15th centuries, still valued by scholars for the abundance of its information.
