ADINOLFI, PASQUALE. - Priest and writer, b. in Rome on 5 Nov. 1816, d. on 20 Jan. 1882. Ordained in 1839, he devoted himself, by exploring archives and studying documents, to original research on medieval Roman topography, of which he offered a first specimen with Laterano e via Maggiore (Rome 1857). Four other essays are fragments of the principal work Roma nell'età di mezzo (Rome 1881–82), conceived in eight volumes but left in manuscript after the second because of the A.’s death. Despite his artificial manner of expression and lack of criticism, since he deliberately chose to ignore the most recent studies on the subject, this was the first great work on the topography of Rome in the 14th and 15th centuries, and it still enjoys authority among scholars for the wealth of its information.
