ADLER, Guido. – Musicologist, born at Eibenschütz on 10 November 1855, died in Vienna on 15 February 1941. He studied law at the university of that city, but devoted himself to historical musical studies; from 1885 he taught at the University of Prague, and from 1898 to 1927 at that of Vienna, where he founded and animated a school of historical musicology, fruitful in methods and results.
Principal works: *Der Stil in der Musik* (1911); *Metodo der Musikgeschichte* (1919), very important also for the study of sacred music; *R. Wagner* (2nd ed., 1923). The author was the originator and editor of the *Handbuch der Musikgeschichte* (2nd ed., Berlin 1930) and of the *Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich* (8 vols., from 1894 onwards) in collaboration with many scholars. He also wrote a memoir, *Wollen und Wirken* (1935).
