ADLER, GUIDO. - Musicologist b. at Eibenschütz on 1 Nov. 1855, d. at Vienna on 15 Feb. 1941. He studied law at the University of that city, but devoted himself to historical-musical studies; from 1885 he taught at the University of Prague, from 1898 to 1927 at that of Vienna, where he founded and was the animating force of a historical-musical school, fruitful in methods and results.

Principal works: Der Stil in der Musik (1911); Methode der Musikgeschichte (1919), very important also for the study of sacred music; R. Wagner (2nd ed., 1923). A. was the originator and editor of the Handbuch der Musikgeschichte (2nd ed., Berlin 1930) and of the Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich (80 vols., from 1894 onward) in collaboration with many scholars. He also wrote a book of memoirs, Wollen und Wirken (1935).
