ADLER, GUIDO. — Musicologist, born in Eibenschütz on 1 November 1855, died in Vienna on 15 February 1941. He studied law at the University of that city, but devoted himself to historical music studies; from 1885 he taught at the University of Prague, and from 1898 to 1927 at that of Vienna, where he founded and directed a historical-musicological school, fruitful in methods and results.
Principal works: Der Stil in der Musik (1911); Methode der Musikgeschichte (1919), also of great importance for the study of sacred music; R. Wagner (2nd ed., 1923). A. conceived and edited the Handbuch der Musikgeschichte (2nd ed., Berlin 1930) and the Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich (80 vols., from 1894 onward), in collaboration with many scholars. He also wrote a book of memoirs, Wollen und Wirken (1935).
