STOCKJOBBING. - Speculation consisting in publishing or otherwise divulging false, exaggerated or tendentious news, or employing other artifices, apt to cause a rise or a fall in the price of goods, or of securities admitted to the stock exchange lists or negotiable on the public market. In many legislations a. is considered a crime (for Italy v. Cod. pen. arts. 267 and 501).
A., as is obvious, is always immoral. Whoever has recourse to it injures commutative justice to the extent of the damage that he actually causes to others; and to that extent he is therefore bound to restitution.
If it proves very difficult or impossible to identify the injured parties - which occurs in cases in which a. assumes considerable proportions - according to the common feeling the sums unduly realized must be employed in works of charity. (v. BOBBA).
