FRANCISCO AGUADO. - Spanish Jesuit, b. at Torrejón de Ardoz on 11 Oct. 1572, d. at Madrid on 15 Jan. 1654. He spent his entire life in administrative roles: superior, rector, novice master, provincial, everywhere distinguishing himself by his exact observance and the example of uncommon holiness. Preacher to the king and for fourteen years confessor to the Duke of Olivares, he never took advantage of his position, always demonstrating the utmost disinterestedness and the most open frankness.
He left several works on preaching and ascetics; the most noteworthy is *Tomo primero del perfecto religioso*, Madrid 1629. The second volume, already prepared but withheld—so the author states in the preface to the first—until he could give it the final touches, was never published. Also worthy of mention is *El cristiano sabio*, Madrid 1670.
