AGUADO, FRANCESCO. - Spanish Jesuit, b. at Torrejón de Ardoz on 11 Oct. 1572, d. at Madrid on 15 Jan. 1654. He spent his entire life in positions of government: superior, rector, master of novices, provincial, distinguishing himself everywhere by his exact observance and the example of an uncommon holiness. Preacher to the king and, for fourteen years, confessor to the duke of Olivares, he never took advantage of his office, always showing the most absolute disinterestedness and the utmost frankness.
He left several works on preaching and asceticism; the most worthy of mention is Tomo primero del perfecto religioso, Madrid 1629. The second volume, already completed but withheld—says the author in the preface to the first—in order to give it its final revision, never saw the light. Also to be remembered is El cristiano sabio, Madrid 1670.
