AGUADO, FRANCESCO. - Spanish Jesuit, b. at Torrejón de Ardoz on 11 Oct. 1572, d. at Madrid on 15 Jan. 1654. He spent his whole life in offices of government: superior, rector, master of novices, provincial, distinguishing himself everywhere by his exact observance and the example of an uncommon holiness. Preacher to the king and for fourteen years confessor to the Duke of Olivares, he never took advantage of his position, always showing the most absolute disinterestedness and the most open frankness.
He left several works of preaching and asceticism; the most worthy of mention is Tomo primero del perfecto religioso, Madrid 1629. The second volume, already finished but held back - says the author in the preface to the first - in order to give it a final touch, never saw the light. Also to be remembered is El cristiano sabio, Madrid 1670.
