AGUILERA, EMMANUELE. — Sicilian Jesuit, born in Licata on 23 December 1677, died in Palermo on 27 October 1740. Professor of philosophy in Rome and subsequently of theology for fourteen years, he was recalled to Sicily to write the history of that province, and published two volumes of it: Provinciae Siculae S. I. ortus et res gestae ab
anno 1546 ad annum 1611, and ab anno 1612 ad annum 1672 (Palermo 1737–40). A work in which the biographical element is abundant, but far removed from any panegyrical tone.
Several other publications by him are also known, almost all anonymous or pseudonymous; the following may be mentioned: Lettere del conte Aurelio Rosalbi al sig. Carminio Donzelli, letterato di Salerno (Florence and Palermo 1728), in defense of the teaching method of the Jesuit colleges, and Examen dissertationis theologicae negantis baptismum infantis in utero, editae a D. Martino Orelli Barnabita (Florence 1710).
