AGUILAR, ALFONSO de. - Cardinal, inquisitor general of Spain; b. in Madrid in 1653, d. there in 1699. He soon became a canon of the cathedral of Cordova, and since he enjoyed the confidence of King Charles II, he was often entrusted with important political and religious missions. Finally the king proposed him to Innocent XII for the cardinal's hat, which was conferred on him in 1697. Appointed inquisitor general of Spain, he showed great energy in suppressing the Madrid riots of 1699.
