AGUILAR, ALFONSO de. — Cardinal, inquisitor general of Spain; born in Madrid in 1653, died there in 1699. He soon became a canon of the cathedral of Cordova, and, since he enjoyed the confidence of King Carlo II, was often entrusted with important political and religious missions. Finally, the king proposed him to Innocent XII for the cardinal’s hat, which was conferred upon him in 1697. Appointed inquisitor general of Spain, he displayed great energy in suppressing the disturbances in Madrid in 1699.
