AIBLINGER, Johann Kaspar. — Composer, b. at Wasserburg on the Inn, 23 Feb. 1779, d. at Munich, 6 May 1867. He pursued musical studies in Munich and then, in 1802, under Simon Mayr in Bergamo; from 1803 to 1811 he lived in Vicenza, thereafter in Milan as second chapel master to the viceroy. In Germany from 1819, he served as master of Italian opera and from 1826 as court chapel master in Munich, where he died after a brief return to Bergamo. Some of his stage works enjoyed success, but his numerous sacred compositions (masses, litanies, requiems, psalms, offertories, etc.) were rightly prized, in which a sweet harmonic vein is joined to the severest contrapuntal style. He is also linked to the fruitful reform movement in sacred music and, through his efforts, contributed to the revival of performances of the old Italian polyphonists.
