AIBLINGER, JOHANN KASPAR. - Composer, b. at Wasserburg on the Inn on 23 Feb. 1779, d. at Munich on 6 May 1867. He completed his musical studies at Munich and then, in 1802, with Simon Mayr at Bergamo; from 1803 to 1811 he lived at Vicenza, then at Milan as second maestro di cappella to the viceroy; in Germany, from 1819, he was director of the Italian opera and from 1826 maestro di cappella at Munich, where he died after a brief return to Bergamo. Some of his stage works had little success, whereas his numerous religious compositions (masses, litanies, requiems, psalms, offertories, etc.) were rightly prized, in which a harmonic sweetness is accompanied by the strictest contrapuntal style. He is also linked to the fertile reform movement of sacred music and through his activity contributed to the revival of performances of the ancient Italian polyphonists.
