ALBERT, HEINRICH. - Composer, b. at Löbenstein on 8 July 1604, d. at Königsberg on 10 Oct. 1651. He first studied at Dresden (1622), then at Königsberg, where he became organist of the Cathedral. In his 8 books of Arien (1638-50) he left a collection of monodic and polyphonic songs, of both sacred and secular character, in which he proves himself an effective propagator in German musical circles of the Italian-style monody with basso continuo, and a champion of the new German Lied. The modern edition of various of his compositions was edited by E. Bernoulli, in vols. XII and XIII of the Denkmäler der deutschen Tonkunst, and by R. Eitner in the volume Cantatae des 17. und 18. Jahrh. (suppl. to the Monatshefte für Musikgeschichte, 1884).
