AMBROS, AUGUST WILHELM. – Historian of music, b. in Myto (Prague) on 17 November 1816, d. in Vienna on 28 June 1876. A teacher at the University and Conservatory of Prague from 1869 and at the institutions of Vienna from 1872, his fame is due, more than to his other writings, to the titanic undertaking to which he applied himself, commissioned by the publisher Leuckart, in 1860: the famous Geschichte der Musik, left unfinished in the fourth volume (which stops at Frescobaldi) and completed by other scholars.
