AUGUST WILHELM AMBROS. - Music historian, born at Myto (Prague) on 17 Nov. 1816, died at Vienna on 28 June 1876. Professor at the University and Conservatory of Prague from 1869 and at the institutes of Vienna from 1872, his fame rests less on his other writings than on the titanic undertaking he began in 1860 at the behest of the publisher Leuckart: the celebrated Geschichte der Musik, left unfinished at the fourth volume (which stops at Frescobaldi) and completed by other scholars.
