AMBROS, AUGUST WILHELM. - Music historian, b. at Myto (Prague) on 17 Nov. 1816, d. at Vienna on 28 June 1876. A teacher at the University and Conservatory of Prague from 1869 and at the institutes of Vienna from 1872, his fame is due, more than to his other writings, to the titanic undertaking he began in 1860 at the behest of the publisher Leuckart: the famous Geschichte der Musik, which remained unfinished at the fourth volume (which stops at Frescobaldi) and was completed by other scholars.
