ALCÁZAR, ILARIO. — Spanish Dominican missionary, born in 1818 at Villatobas (Toledo), died at Avila on 15 Sept. 1870. Having entered the Dominican Order, he was sent to the Philippines (1837), where he was ordained priest in 1841. He then went (1842) to Tonkin, and was made coadjutor bishop to Mgr Hermosilla (1849); after the latter’s death (1861) he administered the Spanish Dominican mission. He returned to Europe (1869) for the Vatican Council. He published reports on the Tonkinese missions and persecutions, pastoral letters in Annamite, and some ascetical works in the native language.
