ALCÁZAR, ILARIO. – Spanish Dominican missionary, born in 1818 at Villatobas (Toledo), died in Avila on 15 September 1870. Having become a Dominican, he was sent to the Philippines (1837), where he was ordained a priest (1841). He then went (1842) to Tonkin, and was made coadjutor bishop of Bishop Hermosilla (1849); after the latter’s death (1861), he administered the Spanish Dominican mission. He returned to Europe (1869) for the First Vatican Council. He published accounts of the missions and persecutions in Tonkin, pastoral letters in the Annamese language, and some ascetical works in the indigenous language.
