ÁLVARADO, ALONSO de. – Spaniard, missionary in the Far East. In 1530 he entered the Augustinian Order at Salamanca, and in 1542 departed for Mexico; from there he subsequently went to Goa, whence in 1549 he returned to Lisbon; in 1571 he went to the Philippines, where he worked successfully in several parishes. His zeal extended to the numerous Chinese immigrants residing in Binondo, for whom he wrote a Christian doctrine (which, however, is also attributed to the Dominican Cobo). From 1575 he was provincial of his Order in the Philippines. He died in Manila in the convent of S. Paolo, in May 1576.
