HANDMAIDS of MARY or of the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. — An institute derived from that of the Handmaids of the Immaculate Conception (v. SORA) and becoming sui juris in 1890, under the title Handmaids of Mary, also called “of Poremba,” a town in Silesia where, in 1866, Bojanowski sent several sisters to open a house. They devote themselves to caring for the sick in hospitals and to assisting children in orphanages and nursery schools. Before the Second World War, it had 200 houses with 1,500 religious.
