ANSEGISO, saint. - Benedictine, abbot of Fontenelle, born perhaps near Saint-Rambert in the diocese of Lyon about 770, of an ancient noble family; died at Fontanelle on 20 July 833. From being a monk of Fontanelle, now S. Vandrille (in the diocese of Rouen), he became in 807 abbot of St-Germer-de-Flay (diocese of Beauvais), which he restored. Charlemagne summoned him to Aachen and entrusted to him various offices and legations. Louis the Pious conferred upon him in 817 the abbey of Luxeuil and in 823 that of Fontanelle, so that he held three abbeys simultaneously. At Fontanelle he published in 827 the Libri IV Capitularium, the oldest collection of Carolingian capitularies, embracing the years 787-826 and systematically arranged according to ecclesiastical (I-II) and civil (III-IV) laws. It was edited in MGH, Leges, sect. I, t. I, pp. 256-325, whence in PL 97, 489-590, and more satisfactorily by A. Boretius anew in MGH, Leges, sect. II, t. I, pp. 382-450. His feast is celebrated on 20 July.
