ANSEGISUS, Saint. - Benedictine, abbot of Fontenelle, b. perhaps near Saint-Rambert in the diocese of Lyon ca. 770 into an ancient noble family, d. at Fontenelle on 20 July 833. From being a monk of Fontenelle, now St. Wandrille (in the diocese of Rouen), he became in 807 abbot of St-Germer-de-Flay (diocese of Beauvais), which he restored. Charlemagne summoned him to Aachen and entrusted him with various offices and legations. Louis the Pious conferred on him in 817 the abbey of Luxeuil and in 823 that of Fontenelle, so that he held three abbeys simultaneously. At Fontenelle he published in 827 the Libri IV Capitularium, the oldest collection of the Carolingian capitularies, which covers the years 787-826, and is systematically arranged according to ecclesiastical (I-II) and civil (III-IV) laws. It was edited in MGH, Leges, sect. I, t. I, pp. 256-325, whence in PL 97, 489-590, and better by A. Boretius anew in MGH, Leges, sect. II, t. I, pp. 382-450. His feast is celebrated on 20 July.
