ANSELMO da CAMPIONE. — The founder of the eponymous family of artists (v. maestri) worked as an architect and sculptor in the final phase of the construction of the Modena cathedral, consecrated in 1184, for which he executed, in collaboration with his three sons, the ornamental part of the Porta Regina, and probably also carved the bas-relief of the Passion in the choir chapel. He is thought to be the same master A. who, in partnership with a master Girando, adorned the Porta Romana in Milan in 1171.
