ANSELM OF CAMPIONE. - Progenitor of the family of artists of the same name (v. CAMPIONESI, maestri), he took part as architect and sculptor in the last phase of the construction of the cathedral of Modena, consecrated in 1184, for which he executed, in collaboration with his three sons, the ornamental part of the Porta Regia and, probably, carved the bas-relief of the Passion in the choir chapel. He is identified with that master A. who, in partnership with a master Girando, decorated the Porta Romana of Milan in 1171.
