ANDREA da SALERNO (ANDREA SABATINI). — Painter, born perhaps before 1480, died at Gaeta in 1530. Of varied and uncertain training, he often changed his stylistic direction, at times turning to the Umbrian masters, at times to the Lombards (Cesare da Sesto), and at times adopting the forms assimilated from the Raphael-inspired milieu. Nevertheless, he retained a certain immediacy and ingenuousness of expression, which positively characterize his work. He left his principal works in Naples (Palazzo Reale, S. Giorgio dei Genovesi, S. Severino and Sosio); in Salerno (S. Giorgio and S. Agostino); and at Montecassino.
