ANDREW OF SALERNO (ANDREA SABATINI). - Painter, b. perhaps before 1480, d. at Gaeta in 1530. Of varied and uncertain training, he often changed stylistic direction, at times harking back to the Umbrian masters, at times to the Lombards (Cesare da Sesto), at times bending to the manners assimilated from the Raphaelesque environment. He nevertheless preserved a certain immediacy and ingenuousness of expression, which positively characterize his production. He left his principal works in Naples (Royal Palace, S. Giorgio dei Genovesi, S. Severino e Sosio); in Salerno (S. Giorgio and S. Agostino) and at Montecassino.
