ANDREA da SALERNO (ANDREA Sabatini). — Painter, born perhaps before 1480, died at Gaeta in 1530. Of varied and uncertain training, he often changed stylistic direction, now drawing on the Umbrian masters, now on the Lombard (Cesare da Sesto), now assimilating modes from the Raphaelite environment. He nevertheless retained a certain immediacy and naivety of expression, which positively characterize his output. His principal works are to be found in Naples (Royal Palace, S. Giorgio dei Genovesi, S. Severino e Sosio); in Salerno (S. Giorgio and S. Agostino) and at Montecassino.
