ANDREA da NOFRI. - Sculptor, b. in Florence in 1388; the date of his death is uncertain. Also known as A. da Firenze, he carved in his native city some statues for the chapel of S. Lorenzo in S. Lucia de' Bardi (1420) and executed works (1441-42) for the dome of the Cathedral. Outside Florence, he worked on the funeral monument of Bishop Simone Vigilante, which has not come down to us, for the church of S. Francesco della Scala in Ancona; in Naples he signed, in the Congregation of S. Monica, the tomb of Count Fernando da S. Severino. His style, which reveals him to be a second-rate artist, adheres to the latest Gothic manner, with unassimilated Renaissance touches.
