ANTERO MARIA of Saint Bonaventure. — Theologian, exegete, preacher, and in secular life Filippo Miccione, born 5 Sept. 1620 at Sestri Ponente (Genoa), died 7 July 1686. By altering the date on his baptismal certificate, he entered the Discalced Augustinians in Genoa at the age of fourteen, not yet having completed fourteen years. Ordained priest in 1644, he devoted himself to preaching and to a life of heroic penance.
His lofty zeal for souls manifested itself especially in the years 1656–57, when Genoa and its surroundings were struck by the plague: he was the animating spirit of all who aided and sheltered the plague-stricken. He recorded the history of that period in his book *La laurenti della città* (Genoa 1658, 1744). In 1659 he was elected master of novices for the Genoese province, in 1662 prior of the convent of San Remo, and later was sent as visitor to the convents of Germany.
Upon his return, he retired to the convent of St Nicholas in Genoa, where he composed his principal work, in three volumes in-folio, *Ponderationes in Psalmos iuxta multiplicem Divinarum Scripturarum sensum* (Lyons 1673, Genoa 1681), of which he supervised the printing by traveling to France. He served as prior of the convent of St Nicholas and in 1665 as provincial prior. He always resided in Genoa. In 1686 he was military chaplain on a galley setting out to fight the Turks. He followed the troops ashore, but was struck by fever and died on the island of Sapienza, leaving behind a reputation for miracles and great holiness. He also published (in Genoa): *Auri gemmarumque mystica fodina* (1677); *Svegliato dei sfaccendati* (1679); *Apostolorum Acta* (1681, 1684); *Discorsi quaresimali* (1683).
