**ANTONIO, poet. – Presumed author of the *Carmen adversus gentes*, attributed by manuscripts to Paulinus of Nola.**
The poem (the 32nd), in 255 couplets, in which the poet criticizes paganism, Judaism, and philosophy, sings of the joy of having found light and harbor in the Christian religion. Since it begins thus: *Discussi, fateor, sectas, Antonius, omnes*, Gallandi considers its author an A. otherwise unknown. But many scholars, interpreting *Antonius* as a vocative, have duly attributed the poem to Paulinus. C. Morelli seems to have demonstrated, from historical content and from defects of composition, culture, versification, language, and style, that the author cannot be Paulinus and proposes assigning it to the anonymous author of the pseud-Cyprianic *Carmen ad Senatorem*.
