APOSTOLOS (ὁ ἀπόστολος). — In the Byzantine liturgy it is the book containing the Epistles and the Acts of the Apostles, or parts of them. It is delivered to the anagnostes after his ordination, since it is his office to read a passage from it during the sacred liturgy, after the Little Entrance, and in other functions.
