ARAN (thus in the Vulgate; Septuagint 'Appéy, Heb. Hârân “mountaineer”). — Son of Thare and brother of Abramo and Nachor. Gen. 11:26–29 mentions him in third place, owing to the lesser importance he occupies in the history of the Jewish people compared with the other two. He was the father of Lot. He died before his father Thare, while he was still living in Ur, leaving orphaned his son, who went with Abramo to Palestine, and two daughters: Melcha, who married Nachor, and Jescha, who is believed to be identical with Sara, wife of Abramo (Gen. 20:12).
