ARBOGAST. - Frankish general who, having distinguished himself in the time of Gratian and Theodosius, became magister militum of Valentinian II; but his excessive interference made him unpopular and caused him to be dismissed. A few days later, Valentinian was found murdered, and A. sought to have the magister officiorum Flavius Eugenius elected.He was not, however, recognized by the emperor of the East, Theodosius the Great, who, after preparing an army, clashed with A.'s forces at the Frigidus River, at the foot of the Julian Alps. Following bitter fighting, victory remained with Theodosius (Sept. 6, 394); Eugenius was beheaded and A. killed himself.
