Ripaut, Archangel

RIPAUT, ARCHANGEL. - Capuchin writer and preacher, b. in Paris in the last decades of the sixteenth century, a court gentleman and counselor in the Parlement, he entered the novitiate on 1 May 1601, and d. there on 17 Feb. 1635.

As guardian and provincial definitor, he prudently opposed the first manifestations among his brethren of the so-called "illuminati" pre-Quietist movement and set out its confutation in La divine naissance, enfance et progrès admirable de l'âme au saint amour de Jésus et de Marie (Paris 1631), describing the orthodox nature of mystical union; in Abomination des abominations des fausses dévotions de ce tems... (ibid. 1632) he denounced the deviations of the "illuminati," the Adamites and the false spirituals. In the 2nd ed. (ibid. 1633) he brought the two works together. They provoked repressive measures on the part of both religious and state authorities, with the support of his celebrated confrere Father Joseph of Paris (v.), and dispersed the movement.
