SABADEL, PIE de LANGOGNE. — Titular Archbishop of Corinth, Capuchin of the Province of Lyon, born at Langogne (Lozère) on 14 November 1850, died in Rome on 4 May 1914.
Having entered the Order, he successively served as secretary of the procurator general (1880–96), consultor to various Roman congregations, and member of the Commission for the Codification of Canon Law; Pius X created him archbishop in 1911. He wrote the treatise L'ouverture de conscience, les Confessions et les Communions dans les communautés (Paris 1891, published several times; Italian translation, Naples 1892). In De bulla Innocentiana seu de potestate Papae committendi simplici praesbytero subdiaconatus et diaconatus collationem (Rome 1902), he examines historically and juridically the question of the powers that the Pope may exceptionally confer upon a simple priest. Following the cessation of the journal Analecta iuris pontificii (v.), he arranged for it to be almost continued in Analecta ecclesiastica (v.); he contributed valuable studies to it, as well as to other French journals in Rome. A member of the Pontifical Academy of the Immaculate Conception, he compiled a work of Marian asceticism and poetry: Le diurnal de Marie. Eulogies quotidiennes (2 vols., Tournay 1889). To facilitate consultation of the Bullarium Ord. Min. Capuccinorum, he arranged and annotated its Regestum sive immororum chronologicum (Rome 1892). In defence of the Church, he was an uncompromising opponent of the government of the Third French Republic, and in the struggle against modernism he belonged to the rigid faction.
