SABA, SALVATORE, of OZIERI. - Titular Archbishop of Carthage, born at Ozieri on 3 September 1795, died at Cotacamund (Nilgiris) on 29 May 1863.
He entered the novitiate of the Friars Minor Capuchin on 7 September 1811; he was lecturer in philosophy and theology, consultor of the S. Congregation of Propaganda (1838) and of the S. Congregation of the Holy Office, general definitor (1838–44), prefect of the missionary College of S. Fedele of Sigmaringa in Rome (1848), minister general (1853–59), and was consecrated archbishop on 5 October 1862.
As minister general he proposed new regulations for the College of S. Fedele (1859), established a special procurator for the missions (1859), oversaw the organization of schools through the Regolamenti degli studi (Bari 1856), and the establishment (1857) of a general house of studies at Bologna. In 1862 Pius IX sent him as apostolic commissioner to the Portuguese East Indies to resolve difficulties in the application of the Concordat between the Holy See and Pietro V of Portugal. Having completed his mission in Goa and Bombay, he fell mortally ill while travelling to Coimbatore.
