SABA, SALVATORE, DA OZIERI. - Titular Archbishop of Carthage, b. at Ozieri on 3 Sept. 1795, d. at Cotacamund (Nilgiris) on 29 May 1863.
He entered the novitiate of the Friars Minor Capuchin on 7 Sept. 1811, was a lecturer in philosophy and theology, a consultor of the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda (1838) and of the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office, definitor general (1838-44), prefect of the missionary College of St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen in Rome (1848), minister general (1853-59), and was consecrated archbishop on 5 Oct. 1862.
As minister general he proposed new norms for the College of St. Fidelis (1859) and established a special procurator for the missions (1859); he saw to the organization of studies with the Regolamenti degli studi (Bari 1856) and to the erection (1857) of a general house of studies at Bologna. In 1862 Pius IX sent him as apostolic commissioner to the Portuguese East Indies to smooth over difficulties in the application of the Concordat between the Holy See and Peter V of Portugal. Having completed his mission in Goa and Bombay, he fell mortally ill while traveling to Coimbatore.
