PEDRO V, King of Portugal. - B. Sept. 16, 1837 in Lisbon, d. there Nov. 11, 1861. On the death of his mother Maria II, in 1853, he was not yet of age and ascended the throne in 1855.
During his reign, the government of the country remained in the hands of anticlerical elements, so that relations with the Church were tense, although in 1857 the Portuguese schism of the Indies was, in a certain sense, composed. In fact, on Feb. 21 of that year Pius IX and Pedro V,
"having resolved to make a treaty, in which the articles of concord for the continuation of the exercise of the rights of patronage of the Portuguese crown in India and China should be established," concluded a concordat negotiated by Card. Di Pietro, apostolic pronuncio in Portugal, and by the minister Rodrigo da Fonseca Magalhães. This concordat conferred the exercise of the right of patronage of the Portuguese crown over the metropolitan Church of Goa, in India, and over the episcopal Church of Macao in China. Furthermore, the Holy See agreed to grant canonical institution to the prelates nominated and presented by the sovereign and to subject once again to the jurisdiction of the metropolitan Church of Goa the dioceses already submitted, as "the circumscription of the suffragan dioceses of India" should "be concluded and approved" one by one, which were then in fact subject to apostolic vicars.
