PEDERSEN, CHRISTIERN. - Danish humanist and theologian, b. around 1480 at Helsing, d. there on 16 January 1554. He studied at the University of Greifswald in 1496 and was thereafter a canon in the archbishopric of Lund.
In Paris he published a Latin-Danish vocabulary and the editio princeps of the Gesta Danorum of Saxo Grammaticus in 1514, based on a manuscript later lost. Having returned to his homeland, he began at Lund various other historical works and became an intimate of King Christian II, following him also into exile. Having become a Lutheran, he began a Danish translation of the Bible. He was close to Christian II on the expedition to Norway, but after the former sovereign's imprisonment he obtained the protection of Frederick I and had permission to reside at Malmö and to open a printing house there. In 1536 he was commissioned by Christian III to translate the whole Bible: this work, known under the name of Christian III's Bible, completed in 1543, revised by various theologians, came out in 1550.
