PAVILLON, NICOLAS. - Bishop, b. in Paris on 17 Nov. 1597, d. at Alet on 8 Dec. 1677.

He assisted St. Vincent de Paul in the work of the missions and merited being proposed by him to Richelieu as a bishop. Appointed bishop of Alet in June 1637, he governed his diocese with great zeal and a spirit of reform. Attached to Arnauld and to the Port-Royal movement, he at first refused to sign the papal condemnation (May 1653) of the 5 propositions of Jansenius, and yielded only in 1668, under Clement IX. By a decree of 18 Jan. 1667 his Mandement sur la signature du formulaire had been placed on the Index. Together with Caulet, bishop of Pamiers (v.), he appealed to the Pope against the right of regalia that Louis XIV wished to extend over all the bishoprics of France (10 Feb. 1673).
