PAVILLON, NICOLAS. - Bishop, b. in Parigi on 17 Nov. 1597, d. at Alet on 8 Dec. 1677.
He assisted s. Vincenzo de' Paoli in the work of the missions and deserved to be proposed by him to Richelieu as bishop. Appointed bishop of Alet in June 1637, he governed his diocese with great zeal and a spirit of reform. Connected with Arnauld and the movement of Port-Royal, he at first refused to sign the papal condemnation (May 1653) of the five propositions of Giansenio, and yielded only in 1668, under Clemente IX. By decree of 18 Jan. 1667, his Mandement sur la signature du formulaire had been placed on the Index. Together with Caulet, Pamiers (v.), he appealed to the Pope against the right of regalia that Luigi XIV wished to extend to all the bishoprics of France (10 Feb. 1673).
