CAULET, FRANÇOIS. - B. at Tolosa on 19 May 1610, d. at Pamiers on 7 Aug. 1680. After completing his studies at the college of La Flèche, he cooperated with Abbé Olier in the foundation of the seminary of Vaugirard and of the Company of St-Sulpice. In 1644 Luigi XIV, at the suggestion of St Vincent de' Paoli, appointed him bishop of Pamiers. Free from all ambition, he showed exceptional zeal in seeking the reform of the clergy and the spiritual elevation of his diocese, confronting determined opponents. He nevertheless adhered to the Jansenist movement, and his conduct concerning the formulary of Alessandro VII was not entirely clear, although he advised his clergy to subscribe to it (his Mandement sur la signature du formulaire, of 1665, is on the Index [decree of 5 March 1667]). Energetic, on the other hand, was his stand against the claim of Luigi XIV to extend the rights of regalia to all French bishoprics; he was encouraged and effectively supported by several letters from Pope Innocenzo XI, the last of which, containing
warm praise of his work, reached France shortly after his death.
