CAULET, FRANÇOIS. - Born at Toulouse on 19 May 1610, died at Pamiers on 7 Aug. 1680. After completing his studies at the college of La Flèche, he cooperated with the abbé Olier in the founding of the seminary of Vaugirard and of the Company of St-Sulpice. In 1644 Louis XIV, on the suggestion of St. Vincent de Paul, appointed him bishop of Pamiers. Averse to all ambition, he showed exceptional zeal in desiring the reform of the clergy and the spiritual elevation of his diocese, facing stubborn opponents. He adhered, however, to the Jansenist movement, and his conduct with regard to the formulary of Alexander VII was not very clear, although he advised his clergy to subscribe to it (his Mandement sur la signature du formulaire, of 1665, is on the Index [decree of 5 March 1667]). Energetic, on the other hand, was his stand against the claim of Louis XIV to extend the rights of regalia to all the French bishoprics, encouraged and validly supported by several letters of Pope Innocent XI, the last of which, containing a warm eulogy of his work, reached France shortly after his death.
