THE CATHOLIC TIMES. - English Catholic weekly, founded in London by Msgr. James Nugent (1822-1904), the great social propagandist of Liverpool, in 1867 under the title The Northern Press, which in March 1872 became C. T. With the full approval of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, it devoted itself to an intense work of propaganda for social justice along the lines of the papal encyclicals, seeking to protect, within the current industrial structure of society, the interests of the poorer classes. While strenuously combating every idea of class struggle, it does not spare with its criticisms the abuses of capitalism and works at the same time to create a good understanding between employers and workers on the basis of a sentiment of mutual trust.
