CATHOLIC TIMES, THE. – English Catholic weekly, founded in London by Msgr. James Nugent (1822–1904), the great social propagandist of Liverpool, in 1867 under the title The Northern Press, which in March 1872 became C. T. With the full approval of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, it devoted itself to an intense campaign of propaganda for social justice along the lines of the papal encyclicals, seeking to protect the interests of the poorer classes within the present industrial structure of society. While vigorously combating every idea of class struggle, it does not spare the abuses of capitalism in its criticisms, and at the same time works to create good understanding between employers and workers on the basis of a feeling of mutual trust.
