PEDICINI, CARLO. - Cardinal, b. at Benevento on 2 Nov. 1769, d. at Rome on 19 Nov. 1843. Having entered the prelature at a very young age, in 1814 he was a member of the State commission, chaired by Rivarola, which prepared the return of Pio VII to Rome. In 1816 he was appointed secretary of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide. Pio VII, in the Consistory of 10 March 1823, created him cardinal.
Leone XII, as soon as he was elected pope (1823), chose him as his successor in the prefecture of the Congregation of Ecclesiastical Immunity, and Pio VIII made him secretary of Memorials and prefect of the Congregation of Rites (1830). Gregorio XVI chose him as his successor in the prefecture of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide (1831), and three years later appointed him vice-chancellor of the S. Romana Chiesa. Bishop of Palestrina from 5 July 1830, he carried out there a most distinguished pastoral activity, building the façade of the Cathedral, giving new life to the Seminary and to the religious institutes, and showing himself generously lavish toward the poor and the suffering.
His name is permanently linked with the life of the b. Anna Maria Taigi, whose confidant and spiritual director he was. After the death of the pious woman, he hastened her glorification through his authoritative judgment.
