PALLOTTA, ANTONIO. - Cardinal, b. in Ferrara on 23 February 1770, d. at Monte Cassiano (Macerata) on 19 July 1834. Having completed his studies at the Seminary of Frascati and at the Collegio Nazareno, he was admitted to the prelature. In 1796, Pius VI appointed him referendary of the Segnatura, and four years later he became ponente of the Buon Governo and canon of St. Peter's, claiming for his colleagues the privilege of the apostolic protonotariate as soon as he had taken the oath before the cardinal camerlengo.
Commissioner of S. Spirito in 1814, he displayed great activity in repressing not a few abuses and in securing better care for the sick in the Roman hospitals. Promoted in 1816 to auditor general of the Apostolic Chamber, he was created and published cardinal by Pius VII in the Consistory of 10 March 1823, with the title of S. Silvestro in Capite. Leo XII wanted him as apostolic legate of Marittima and Campagna, where he showed uncommon energy in the fight against brigandage.
