PALLOTTA, Antonio. — Cardinal, born in Ferrara on 23 Feb. 1770, died at Monte Cassiano (Macerata) on 19 July 1834. After completing his studies at the Seminary of Frascati and at the Nazareno College, he was admitted to the Prelature. In 1796, Pius VI appointed him Referendary of the Segnatura, and four years later he became Ponens of the Buon Governo and Canon of St Peter’s, reclaiming for his colleagues the privilege of Apostolic Protonotary as soon as he had taken the oath before the Cardinal Camerlengo.
In 1814 he was Commissioner of the Santo Spirito, displaying great energy in suppressing numerous abuses and improving the care of the sick in Roman hospitals. Promoted in 1816 as Auditor General of the Apostolic Chamber, he was created and published Cardinal by Pius VII in the Consistory of 2 March 1823, with the title of S. Silvestro in capite. Leo XII appointed him Apostolic Legate of Marittima and Campagna, where he displayed uncommon vigour in combating brigandage.
