PALLOTTA, GIOVANNI EVANGELISTA. - Cardinal, b. in 1548 at Caprarola, d. in Rome on 2 Aug. 1620.
By Sixtus V, whose familiar he had already been, he was appointed secretary of the Memorials and sealer of the Penitentiary (1585). For his charity and integrity of life he was placed in charge of the Dataria (1587), appointed archbishop of Cosenza (Sept. 1587), cardinal (18 Dec. 1587), and was much consulted by the Pontiff. He was also bishop of Frascati (24 Jan. 1611) and of Porto (8 Apr. 1620). Archpriest of St. Peter's and president of the Fabbrica, superintendent of the works for the enlargement of the VaticanBasilica, according to the design of Maderno, which he supported. A protector of artists and men of letters, among them Tasso, he displayed his patronage in the embellishments, restorations and constructions carried out in Rome (at S. Lorenzo in Lucina), Cosenza, Frascati and his native town.
