ARCHPRIEST. - This term is commonly used to designate the priest who has the ordinary care of souls; technically it means the parish priest who holds as his title a parish that is sometimes also a rural vicariate; more frequently it is understood as a dignity of a Chapter (v.), which is generally united with the office of the care of souls in cathedral or collegiate Chapters.

This term can also mean the office of a cardinal who properly takes the name of cardinal archpriest insofar as he presides over and governs the clergy of one of the patriarchal basilicas of Rome (St. John, St. Peter, St. Mary Major). For the historical part v. CARDINAL and PRESBYTER.
