In altissimo militantis Ecclesiae
Bull on the Foundation of the Cappella Giulia
Pius, Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God, for perpetual memory of the matter.
1 In the highest pinnacle of the Principate of the Church Militant, divinely established, We ought to stir the Christian flock committed to Us to the observance of divine worship, not only by precepts but also by examples, so that to Almighty God, whose place, although unworthy, We bear on earth, supplication may be made most humbly and most worthily for the peace and unity of the Christian world and of the Church committed to Us; and so that nowhere among all peoples may anything be omitted in divine praises, or through deformity of places, or through negligence of persons. Since therefore We have turned over this very matter in Our mind with all Our heart, so that We might recognize by clear testimony of grace the benefit of ruling the world bestowed upon Us by God Himself, We have directed Our mind to some illustrious work, which would inflame both the present and future generations to cultivate religion most zealously; which counsel indeed, although We were placed in lower degrees of dignity, We have declared in many Monasteries and Temples, partly to be restored, partly to be erected anew, inducing divine worship in these with all Our strength, both in certain other cities of Italy and in the City itself at great expense and no small effort c. Yet elevated to the supreme apex of the apostolate, We have accomplished this with so much greater diligence and liberality, inasmuch as the works instituted by Us for maintaining most worthily the dignity of the house of God abundantly declare how much greater care of the Christian flock was enjoined upon Us, and how much broader faculty of doing good was granted to Us; following that most wise King of the Hebrews in the old law, who, although he dwelt in the great darkness of Christian light, nevertheless built for God, to whom he supplicated most humbly, a temple most ornate with sculptured stones and carvings, with no parsimony of expense. Some of Our predecessors, through the new law c The revenues of this Church, which come from the houses adjacent around it, are received by the Cappella Julia, by its Administrator, and go to the benefit and utility of the same Chapel.

8 of the Christian law: illuminated by the rays of light, and following the blessed memory of Sixtus P. P. IV, our uncle according to the flesh, whom we zealously imitate, who considered nothing more ancient, more holy, nothing more salutary for the governance of the Roman Church, than to provide for the worship of Almighty God to be celebrated with the utmost care both for the present and for posterity, with dignity, beauty, and the piety and holiness of men; when he restored, erected, and enriched with annual revenue many other chapels, temples, and monasteries throughout the City for the honest preservation of divine worship in them, then indeed in the very Basilica of the Prince of the Apostles—a chapel, in which his Body, when it befell that he should depart from human affairs, the Lord disposing, might be preserved for the perpetual memory of posterity, he built at no small expense, and adorned it with divine praises to be celebrated there daily, and with very many Indulgences, and for this reason he aggregated to the orders of Beneficiaries and Clerics certain other Beneficiaries and Clerics, so called, by his own motion. We therefore, lest we should show less gratitude to our God than they, seeing the pious Basilica of the Prince of the Apostles both uncultivated in situation and collapsing with age, applying our mind to the worthy building of so great a Temple, so that his name and divinity on earth might have a house surpassing all others in dignity and beauty, have already founded a very great Chapel of the same Basilica of considerable width and height with a barrel-vaulted roof, and we daily pursue with the utmost zeal that the foundation be brought to a perfect work. And since we would seem to have contributed little to so great a work's magnitude, or to our posterity, unless we reformed the entire Church, deformed by depraved morals, as much as in us lay, celebrating a general Council in the Lateran Basilica, we established the reformation of all places and persons, so that to the Prince of the Apostles himself, whose Vicariate we bear, there might be ministered no less the religion and holiness of ministers than the dignity and elegance of his Chapel itself. To this Chapel itself, besides solid and marble walls, besides the very high and lofty vault, besides the many and long labors of Painters and Sculptors, besides the pavement to be laid with vermiculated stones, besides the most precious vestments of Priests, wishing to provide so that divine praises might be celebrated more honorably and sweetly, by our own motion, not at the instance of our beloved sons the Archpriest and Chapter of the said Basilica, or of any other offered to us on this matter, but from our mere liberality and from our certain knowledge, so that henceforth for perpetual future times in the said Chapel under the invocation of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, which is called the Julia Chapel, and in which we wish our body to be buried when life has departed from us, there shall be twelve Singers, and as many Scholars, and two Masters, one of music and the other of grammar, so that from such a College of Singers, our Chapel of the Palace, to which Singers have been accustomed to be brought from the parts of Gaul and Spain, when no one fit for this purpose is educated in the City, when need shall be, may be supplied, who there on individual days shall be bound to sing the Canonical Hours, by Apostolic authority by the tenor of these presents we establish and ordain. And so that the Singers, Scholars, and Masters aforesaid may have cellars for the sustenance of their life, the Priory of St. Paul and the Church of St. James in Septignano of the Transtiberine region under the Janiculum, which, as it is asserted, existed by right of lay patronage, a perpetual Chaplaincy at the Altar of Sts. Peter and Paul in the Church of St. Mary in Camptello of the City of the Campitelli region, and the Priory of St. John Novelli of Spinellis outside the viridarian gate of the City of the Order of St. Augustine, all of which—the mode of vacancy, even if any general reservation even in the body of Law should result from it, and their qualities and values we wish to be held as expressed in these presents, and to the right of patronage of this kind, if any be, specially and expressly derogating, provided that at the time of the giving of these presents there be not in the Church of St. James and the Chapel and Priories aforesaid any special right acquired to anyone, with annexes and all rights and appurtenances thereof to the same Chapel, whose fruits are none, without prejudice to unions otherwise made of them to the same Chapel by Us, by the aforesaid Apostolic authority we perpetually unite, annex, and incorporate, and certain ones with a Vineyard and gardens near the

Notes
- Namely Sixtus Gara de Rovere, nephew of Julius II through his sister Luchina, whom Julius the Pontiff himself created Cardinal, and constituted Vice-chancellor of the Holy Roman Church.

- Doubtless from the beginning of the year of the Incarnation. Compare the years of the Pontificate, and the matter is evident to the eye. That Julian de Rovere before his Pontificate built many buildings or restored or embellished them is attested by History. He built a spacious portico before the Church in the City of Bologna; he restored the Church of the Holy Apostles together with a Portico in the City; and with great expense and labour, to omit other things. He repaired and adorned the Church of St. Peter in Chains. More things occur to the reader in Ciaconius in the life of Julian Cardinal de Rovere. (*) Works unfinished.
- He alludes to John Anthony of St. George, who was created Presbyter Cardinal by Alexander VI with the title of SS. Nereus and Achilleus in the year 1507. He obtained the Church of Sabina, and died at Rome on 14 March 1509. Consult Ughelli.
- Among the Bishops of Praeneste no one of this age occurs by the name Francis, except Cardinal Francis Soderini, who nevertheless, if we hear Ughelli, not until after the death of Julius, that is in the year 1513, proceeded to govern the Church of Praeneste. I would prefer, however, to correct an error in Ughelli rather than to raise doubt concerning the integrity of this constitution. Therefore I affirm that Francis Soderini, Cardinal commonly called of Volterra, is to be understood thus. Ancient censuals of the Chapel of Julius confirm this, which teach that Julius II purchased from Cardinal Volterra a house situated in the Borgo at a fixed price.
- Concerning this donation of the Archbishopric of Tarentum we have treated above, p. 194.

- Cioè dall'inizio dell'anno dall'Incarnazione.
