PATRIZI, COSTANTINO. — Cardinal, born in Siena on 4 Sept. 1798, son of Giovanni, hereditary standard-bearer of the Holy Roman Church and senator of Rome, and of Princess Cunegonda of Saxony; died in Rome on 17 Dec. 1876.
Ordained priest in 1821, he was appointed by Pius VII as domestic prelate, referendary of the Apostolic Signatura, and rapporteur for the Buon Governo, while Leo XII enrolled him among the auditors of the Roman Rota. Gregory XVI made him his majordomo. In the Consistory of 23 June 1834 he was created cardinal *in pectore*, published on 11 July 1836, and assigned the title of S. Silvestro in Capite.
In 1841 he became vicar general of Rome. In the Consistory held by Pius IX in Gaeta on 20 Apr. 1849 he opted for the suburbicarian see of Albano, later passing to Porto and Santa Rufina (12 Dec. 1860) and then to Ostia and Velletri (11 Dec. 1870) as dean of the Sacred College. Prefect of the Congregations of Ceremonies and of Rites, and secretary of the Congregation of the Holy Office, he served as procurator for Cardinal Carlo Odescalchi in the Consistory of 30 Nov. 1838 for the latter’s renunciation of the purple; he solemnly baptized the Jewish convert Alfonso M. Ratisbonne following the latter’s miraculous vision of the Madonna in Sant’Andrea delle Fratte (1842); and finally he was sent by Pius IX as legate to Paris for the baptism of Prince Eugene, son of Napoleon III (1856).
