PATRIZI, COSTANTINO. - Cardinal, b. at Siena on 4 Sept. 1798, son of Giovanni, hereditary standard-bearer of the Holy Roman Church and senator of Rome, and of Princess Cunegonda of Saxony; d. at Rome on 17 Dec. 1876.

Ordained priest in 1821, he was appointed by Pio VII domestic prelate, referendary of the Apostolic Signatura, and rapporteur of the Buon governo, while Leone XII enrolled him among the auditors of the Rota. Gregorio XVI made him his majordomo. In the Consistory of 23 June 1834 he created him and reserved him in pectore, publishing him on 11 July 1836 and conferring upon him the title of S. Silvestro in capite.

In 1841 he became vicar general of Rome. In the Consistory held by Pio IX at Gaeta on 20 Apr. 1849 he opted for the suburbicarian see of Albano, subsequently passing to Porto e S. Rufina (12 Dec. 1860) and to Ostia e Vel-

Velletri (11 Dec. 1870) as dean of the Sacred College. Prefect of the Congregations of Ceremonial and of Rites, and secretary of the Congregation of the Holy Office, he acted as procurator for Card. Carlo Odescalchi at the Consistory of 30 Nov. 1838, on the occasion of the latter’s renunciation of the cardinalate; he solemnly conferred baptism upon the Jew Alfonso M. Ratisbonne, converted following the miraculous apparition of the Madonna in S. Andrea delle Fratte (1842); finally, he was Pius IX’s legate in Paris for the baptism of Prince Eugenio, son of Napoleone III (1856).
