SERAFINO of MONTEGRANARO, saint. – Lay Capuchin, born in Montegranaro (Ascoli Piceno) in 1540, entered the novitiate in Jesi around 1557, died in Ascoli Piceno on 12 Oct. 1604. Declared Blessed by Benedict XIII on 18 July 1729; canonized by Clement XIII on 16 July 1767. Feast day 12 Oct.
In humility and penance, performing the duties of cook, sacristan, mason, beggar in various convents and for a longer time in Ascoli, he was generous in consoling charity; the poor, surrounded by the veneration of the consolated populace, he corrected, urged to do good. Moving were his discourses, and to his confreres. The spirit of prayer, love of the Crucified and of Holy Mary merited him divine charisms. The Minister General St. Lawrence of Brindisi did not grant his prayer to go on mission, leaving him in Ascoli to edify the faithful.
