FIDELIS OF SIGMARINGEN, Saint. - Protomartyr of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and of the S. Congregation of Propaganda Fide, b. at Sigmaringen (Swabia) around the beginning of Oct. 1578, d. at Seewis (Prättigau), murdered by rioting Protestants on 24 Apr. 1622.
Having earned his degree in philosophy (1601) and in utroque iure (1611) at Fribourg in Switzerland, he practiced the magistracy with uprightness as a member of the Council of Regency at Ensisheim (Alsace); ordained a priest at Constance (1612), he entered the Capuchins and made his solemn profession at Fribourg in Switzerland on 4 Oct. 1613; he distinguished himself as a preacher and was guardian at Rheinfelden (1618-19), Feldkirch (1619-20), Fribourg (1620-21), Feldkirch (1621-22). He gave religious assistance to the Austro-Spanish troops, especially during epidemics; he directed the mission against the Protestants of the Grisons entrusted to the Swiss Capuchins by Propaganda Fide (1621). Tireless and effective in the defense of the Faith both through preaching and through private controversy, he obtained conversions even of persons of rank, among them Count Rudolf de Salis. He brought about an edict of proscription of the preachers and of Protestant worship, while Catholics were obliged to attend religious instruction. The partisan reaction of the Reformed crowned with martyrdom a life of eminent virtues. Of his pamphlets of devotion and controversy, the Exercitia spirituale o seraphicae devotionis (Fribourg in Switzerland 1746 and 1753, Rome 1756, etc.) enjoyed wide circulation, translated into various languages; they contain in particular the method of his spiritual life. His beatification was celebrated in March 1729. He was canonized by Benedict XIV on 29 June 1746. Feast on 24 Apr.
