ARIADNE, Saint, Martyr. - Called Maria in the Latin (BHL, 5422) and Syriac (BHO, 682) versions of the Greek Passio (BHG, 165), she was the slave of a certain Tertullus, a wealthy lord of an unspecified provincial city, which for the author of the Greek Passio is Primessus in Phrygia Salutaris. Tertullus, a pagan and a benefactor of the city, is accused of harboring Christians, but the judge acquits him of the charge. A. refuses to sacrifice; sentenced to torture, it is not applied to her at the request of those present; rather, she is granted a three-day delay. A. declares to the judge that she will decide in favor of what will benefit her most. What has been related thus far is the summary of two documents of high historical value (the trial of Tertullus and the interrogation of A.) which the author of the Greek Passio, of the second half of the 4th century, has set within a fantastic narrative that closes with the miraculous hiding of A. in the bosom of a rock. The date of the martyrdom remains uncertain between the 2nd and 4th centuries.
Feast: in the East she is commemorated on September 18, 25, 26, 27; in the West on November 1, under the name of Maria, in the Hieronymian and Romanmartyrologies; in the latter, Baronio also inserted her on September 17, under the name of A.
